Renaud Garcia-Fons

France / Spain

Renaud Garcia-Fons, born in 1962, is considered one of the most innovative double bass players of our time. With his five-string double bass, which gives the instrument a remarkable tonal range, he impresses with exceptional bowing technique and moves effortlessly between jazz, classical, and world music.

His compositions and acclaimed albums – including Oriental Bass, Méditerranées, and Cinematic Double Bass – uniquely blend musical traditions from diverse cultures. Garcia-Fons has collaborated with artists such as Nguyên Lê, Michel Portal, Dhafer Youssef, and Paul Simon, and brings his love of flamenco, jazz, and Mediterranean sounds to each new project.

As a soloist, composer, and musical explorer, he has inspired audiences and musicians worldwide for decades and is recognized as one of the great innovators of the double bass.

The newly formed Blue Maqam Quartet illustrates Garcia-Fons’ passion for bridging musical worlds. Its original repertoire draws inspiration from the traditions of Eastern and Mediterranean modes (Maqam) as well as music from across the Atlantic.
